Restoration of a vintage bike

2026

In February 2026, I got my hands on an old Hero Hawk from [probably] the 2000s or the early 2010s. It was in a terrible condition, so I ended up buying it for just ₹500. With the help of local mechanics in the Navrangpura area of Ahmedabad and utilising the university workshop, I spent about two weeks restoring it. For some, the worn out paint and rusted chrome components might be a primary concern but they really don't affect the function. Personally I really like the look as is. The Hero Hawk is one of the very few vintage single-speed bikes made in India with a frame geometry suited for the road. The frame is made of single-butted steel with beautiful lugged joinery, which means its lifespan is as long as you'd maintain it! I think it’s necessary to recognise objects that have the potential to be revived. It is a form of ethical use and preservation. Additionally, I have been desperate to own a steel fixed gear / single speed bike for a while just because of how insanely cool they are.
